If I ignore the personal insult [which for a UKIP Councillor is “water off a duck’s back”] and the unnecessary history lesson I actually agree with the main thrust of Richard Harris’s letter [issue 348]. His statement“—-I know of no freedom that I have lost [since 1972] that has not been imposed by the will of our sovereign parliament” is perfectly correct. The flaw in the argument is that during this period [apart from 1975] the will of the people and their freedom to express themselves democratically has been ignored by our sovereign parliament by depriving them of a referendum on our continued membership of the EU. Also democracy within this European super state, which has been imposed upon us by our sovereign parliament without a mandate, is very difficult to substantiate but that is a separate issue.
Luckily pressure from Nigel Farage and UKIP over the past 20 years has resulted in a referendum being called on 23rd June. This is the first chance in forty years for ordinary British people to have their say to restore freedom, democracy and to escape the shackles of the EU. Hopefully they will grasp this opportunity with both hands and jump ship before it hits the iceberg.
